May Newsletter

A note from our Chairwoman – Kate Hopper

Hi All! Well, it’s that time of year when I rally the troops for the musical ride once more!  For those of you new to us, this is not a competition, but a chance to get to meet others & have a bit of fun & it is open to all – juniors & seniors.  This year’s theme will be ‘Minions’ (Despicable Me!) & we aim to put on a display at our Strictly Dressage Day on 29th Sept.   Our first training session will be Sat 8th June – time to be confirmed – & this session will be free, there after it will be £5.  Keep a look out for further details or contact me at huskykate4@gmail.com

We are also looking to put together a team for the Quadrille Competition at WestPoint in December.  We won’t know until October if we have been successful with our entry but we will need to be prepared well in advanced.  This year there will be team selection – I will keep you posted!  Kate x

The rest is from me – Tricia.

There is an awful lot of information in this newsletter and I have numbered each point so I hope you will find it easier to follow. I have just about recovered from putting up (and down, then up, then down……then away) the show jumps from our clear round jumping. It was as popular as ever and it was lovely to see so many of you there.

The spring dressage at Conquest ran as smoothly as ever with Joy, Sara and the rest of the BHRC team doing a fantastic job. We decided not to run our Winter Dressage League this year but have a “one off” pre-season dressage competition. This worked really well and we plan on running it again next year. We will continue to run our Summer Dressage League however, and knowing how popular this has been in previous years, I suggest you get your entries in early.

  1. Juniors – our next junior rally will be Tuesday 28th May 11.00 – 12.00 at Paddocks with Karen Court. This will be a mixture of mounted and unmounted activities; the aim of the rally will be “how to improve your flatwork using poles on the ground” and all juniors are welcome; either with their ponies or on foot. The cost is £5.00. We have had requests and ideas from several juniors; we welcome any other ideas, thoughts or reports. Contact Tricia. Our Summer Dressage League is fast approaching and the juniors have their own championship. So remembering all Karen has taught you, come along and be dressage divas with BHRC!

  • Musical ride – Kate is organising training for our Musical Ride that will take place during the interval at Strictly Dressage 2 Music on Sunday 29th September. Everyone is welcome, juniors especially; a free training session is on Saturday 8th June. Kate and I love our D2M and we find our horses love it too. Even Gem, who is now deaf!

  • Training – from Deana Rowland – Continuing our flat work training with Karen Court at ‘Paddocks’ on Saturday mornings. From 10am. £20 per session.

25th May; 8th & 22nd June; 13th & 27th July

No more than 3 members in each session.  Please contact me via text 07841012410 or email deanarowland2@aol.com  to book your place. All monies to be paid up front to secure places. Cancellation policy as on website. Look forward to hearing from you, Deana

Training by Kate Hopper – Hi All, can you let me know what training you would like this year?  We can’t make promises but we will do our best.  If you could also let us know what days of the week & what times are good for you we will do our best to accommodate.  Finally if anyone has any preference to a location, please tell us.  We do have some restrictions with parking, availability & cost with some venues, but your suggestions would be very welcome.

Further training dates with Nikki Lumb in June will appear shortly.

FAQ’s and questions you may not have thought to ask!

  • You are welcome to come to Paddocks on the Friday afternoon/evening. Your stable will be ready from 5.00 pm at an extra cost of £10. Your dinner and breakfast will be provided by BHRC and several committee members will be there to welcome you and help you settle in.

  • Most stables are on shavings

  • You need to provide your own hay, please make sure the hay doesn’t get mixed in with the bedding.

  • You do need to provide hard feed for your horse.

  • You will need water buckets.

  • You may wish to bring your own mucking out tools. (a wheel barrow is especially helpful)

  • All YOUR food is provided but you may wish to bring a cake or crisps to share

  • You will need to provide your own alcohol!!!!

  • If you are vegetarian or have a food allergy, please make sure we are aware of it before camp starts.

  • It is recommended that adults wear a body protector for jumping. (This is compulsory for juniors)

  • You are automatically entered for the dressage competition but it is not compulsory! You can enter either Intro A or Prelim 12.

  • All juniors must have a responsible adult stay with them at night

  • £100 per person. A non-returnable deposit of £80 is required to reserve your place. We take a maximum of 16 at camp therefore the first 16 to pay their deposit will have a place. I will also have a waiting list.

  • Everyone attending camp gets a T shirt, the size guide is below. I will order XL for everyone unless you tell me you want smaller.

  • Rising Stars show jumping – this popular team event is being held by WSRC at Cannington College on Sunday 26th May. We have a team of Lydia Thomas on Ghost, George Smith on Maiden, Samara Nicholls on Minnie and Laura Chilcott on Jingo. These four members have been at many of our training sessions during the winter and it has certainly paid off. This is the first time these brave souls have represented BHRC in a team competition and we wish them the very best of luck. They are jumping at 9.30 am and they would love to see lots of BHRC members supporting them. Thanks go to the BHRC back-up crew of Jane Palfrey and Mia Perham who are our Team Managers for this event. Our thoughts go out to the rider’s back-up crews – (deep breaths!)

  • Clear Round Jumping – (7th June, 12th July & 9th August) we have held the first one which was the usual success, we even managed to stay dry! We are going to need some help setting up on the 7th June. Also taking money and putting away at the end of the evening. Please contact Tricia if you can give a few hours help – I promise cake!

  • Horse agility 2nd June at Heazle – It appears that we have had little response to questions on what you; the members would like to do, re equine events. Sooooooo we the committee, having banded about the idea of Horse Agility, thought that it might be something you would be interested in. Sometimes we have to trial new events to ensure that they are safe, suitable and cost effective for our members. The committee have decided to give it a try out, with the view to putting on a small competition / training session in the future, for anyone interested.
Please feel free to come along and WATCH On June 2nd 10.am – 1pm. at Heazle Equestrian Centre – indoor arena where we will be having a small trial session with Lotta Van de Heyde.

  • Strictly – 29th September at Conquest. Similar set up and classes as last year. Kate and Karen are going to run a lecture and demonstration at camp for anyone who would like to have a go.

  • “Have-a-go” Dressage 2 Music competition – Saturday 31st August at Paddocks. Aimed primarily at combinations that have never been confident enough to enter a D2M class before, it will also be a good practise for anyone wanting to enter Strictly D2M at the end of September. 3 classes, Walk and Trot, Open and Pairs. 20 x 40 m arena. We promise a nice, sympathetic and knowledgeable judge!
